August 29th was declared the International Day Against Nuclear Tests by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2009. It commemorates the August 29, 1991, closure of the world’s largest nuclear test facility in the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan. Today, practice peace with a simple meditation. Sit quietly in a comfortable position, and place your hands in the Dhyana mudra. A mudra is a hand position. Dhyana is one that Buddha is often pictured doing and brings tranquility and inner peace. To form this mudra, place both hands on your lap, right over left, with both palms facing up and thumbs touching. The right hand, representing enlightenment and spirituality, rests atop the left hand, representing illusion. Close your eyes and breathe deeply and slowly. Chant:
"Om Shanti Om." Om is the beginning of the universe, and Shanti is peace. So Om Shanti Om means the universe begins and ends with peace. |
