Today is World Turtle Day, a day set aside to raise awareness for the preservation of these wise, ancient creatures. Turtles and tortoises have been around much longer than humans, and some can live for more than a hundred years. Many cultures incorporate turtles into their stories about the creation of the world, and thus they are a symbol of Mother Earth for many people. Tortoises teach us about being grounded and patient-that children's story is an old one, but always pertinent!-and turtles, who live on the boundary between water and land, teach us about creation, transformation, and transition. Do something today to honor these special creatures-light a candle, draw a picture, or donate to a charity that protects them. Try working with the Turtle Totem. Place images of turtles on your altar and ask the totem to come to you in meditation. Remember that living things are connected to Mother Earth.
