Juniper has long been used in the Ozark Mountains for smoke cleansing, especially in the home. We use our native red cedar, which actually isn’t a cedar, but a juniper, Juniperus virginiana. Common juniper works just as well. You will need:
Crush the berries and resin together in a mortar and pestle. Light your incense charcoal the add a pinch of the incense mixture. Beginning at the front door of your home (inside), move through the entire home in a counterclockwise direction (the direction of removal). End at the front door. Step out the door with the incense burner. Let this burn out completely. Throw any cooled ash into a moving body of water. |
