LLEWELLYN'S SPELL-A-DAY

Spell: Working with Bonfires

Color of the Day
Incense of the Day

A bonfire is a large fire usually designed for celebration or to transmit a signal over a long distance. The word comes from "bone fire," a reference to the use of large fires to burn human bones, as in times of plague.
For Witches and Pagans today, bonfires are typically joyous occasions and often follow the Wheel of the Year, but you can use a bonfire for other events, too. Like all fires, the bonfire itself mimics ritual energy-from the quiet intentional lighting, to the rising energy of the flames, and then to the ebbing, grounding of the soft coals.
Begin your ritual magick with an ordered, ceremonial laying of the wood and a practiced fire-lighting. Then let your ritual work follow the fire's energy. Finish by sitting fireside, scrying into the flames or watching heat-shapes dance through the fading coals.
