| Although this ancient Greek festival has largely been absorbed by Christmas, Saturnalia was once the best loved of the festivals of antiquity. Since Saturn rules structures and rules, Saturnalia became a time when the social order was relaxed and great freedom was permitted. Slaves were treated as equals, and drinking, dancing, games, and feasting took place every day for about a week in late December. Gifts were given, in particular wax candles.
