| Today is Pecan Day The pecan tree, a native to North America, grows up to 100 feet tall and may live over 400 years. A single tree can produce several hundred pounds of nuts. The tree and its nuts attract many species of wildlife. The Algonquin Indians gave us the name "pecan" from the original term paccan, for a nut htat must be cracked with a stone. In Texas, the Mariame tribe revered the pecan tree as sacred, much as some European tribes honored to oak or the ash. It represented the Great Spirit to them. The nuts formed a major part of their diet. If pecan trees can grow in your area, consider planting one. Otherwise, celebrate this holiday by eating pecans.
