20 Easy Earth Magic Rituals for Chaotic Times

Witchcraft Altar in Nature for Earth Magic

It's easy to feel untethered to truth right now. When we feel untethered to truth, we begin to drift from hope and possibility, and magic starts to feel out of reach. When magic feels out of reach, we lose connection to our body.

To find truth, real truth that lives in the cycles of all things, we must return to nature. Nature holds a type of truth that doesn't exist in our busy lives, where we are spoon fed fear and disconnection every time we open our devices. The life we have been conditioned to lead, ones that make us a more valuable resource for capitalism to feed on, have become a hamster wheel that drains us of life force, let alone magic.

When we are untethered to truth, we become tethered to things that are NOT truth, because we are always tethered to something, like it or not. You may feel tethered to fear, to achieving more, to cycling through shadow work, to seeking the next deity to solve your problems, or maybe you are spending your time trying to stay in the cosmic realm and escape this human game altogether.

I know, because it's me, too; it's all of us. What pulls you out of your body and into distraction isn't something you're doing wrong—it's conditioning. And it is a conditioning we cannot escape unless we are willing to return fully to nature. Returning to nature is how we will keep our humanity alive.

Our bodies crave the medicine only nature can provide, and we need it now more than ever. It's the antidote to the collective poison of fear, algorithm addictions, and false truths that are around every corner. It is also the place where we go to feel—really feel—what our bodies are telling us. It's where you'll find freedom. Freedom to blow like the wind, bloom like a rose on a summer day, and the sparkle of a bursting rainbow after a rainstorm. It all happens inside our body when we allow ourselves to feel deeply without the outside world trying to steal our attention away. Without this body, we would not be able to taste the sweet nectar of a fresh cold slice of watermelon on a hot day or take a bite of a warm chocolate chip cookie straight off the pan.

Connection to our body and to nature is the core facet of earth magic in the north of the spiral path of magic. It is where we go to gather resources, connect to our beating hearts, and awaken our deepest inner knowing fields. This is when we can begin to tap into the magic that the earth holds.

Letting the Earth Hold You
To walk the path of earth magic is to choose devotion to your body and to nature as a magical practice. It requires us to be willing to step aside from the distractions of the world long enough to find presence with ourselves and our role in the bigger picture. The earth herself carries a frequency that can be felt and when we connect to it, the change in your body will transform the way you see yourself and how your life is or isn't unfolding. In nature you are enough as you are. The earth is the great mother, the most important "she" we will ever experiences. And she doesn't ask you to be anything different, she just asks you to remember that you are a part of her.

It is a radical act in these crazy times to set everything aside and spend more time sitting with your body and the field of energy that nature provides, regardless of where you are and what the weather is, because it’s contradictory to the hustle culture of doing more and achieving more—and yes, this happens in magic, too. We think we should be doing a particular working because the moon is right, or the seasons are changing, or insert any other reason. When really, the most powerful magic happens when you allow your body to be fully balanced, have clarity in what you want and why, then raise energy for the work, then close the field of energy you've called forth. Nature is one way of getting through these stages simply, without any extra tools needed. Every cycle that a spell or ritual goes through can also be found in nature.

I believe earth magic is overlooked because it can be simple. At times we feel like our intentions need something big, something extraordinary for it to work. We crave the extra-ordinary in many of our practices and I understand why—expansion and big energy workings feel amazing. Earth magic is just as powerful, even if more simplistic. Nature itself is not simplistic in how it operates, but it is predictable in how it cycles itself and regenerates itself. Same with our bodies.

Yet while the world is already on fire half the time, grounding deep into the earth is what is going to get us through this while connected to our flesh and bone bodies, un-addicted to machines and power structures. In fact, I would go so far as to say that without the medicine the earth provides, we will lose touch with our last shreds of humanity while artificial intelligence is rising.

I wrote several books based upon this principle because connection to our bodies is falling below our desire for connection to fast and easy scrolling. This is why I am starting with the first book to the north, which is earth and our body.

The North Speaks
On the wheel of elemental magic, the north is where the earth, your body and wisdom are found. The north says that she is the extra-ordinary you are seeking. She says that when you allow yourself time in stillness to linger, to gather your energy, resources, and truth, that anything you think of as ordinary will change when you see it through the lens of the north. Because it's real and it's alive.

The north balances scattered energy.
The north teaches you that everything changes and death and rebirth are a part of this journey.
The north speaks in codes that are felt inside your body, not in your mind.
The north says that everything you want is already within reach as abundance is created, not found.
The north always leads you to truth.

To master earth magic, you must be willing to build a relationship with the seasons of your soul and how it is reflected inside your body. All the flowers that one plant can grow can never happen at the same time—blooming works in cycles. It's the same for you. You cannot grow and expand in every area of your life; blooming works in cycles. This is the wisdom of the north.

The north, when she speaks, will always ask you to trust what you feel in your body. Earth magic of the north is the foundational part of all magic as it's the foundation of everything you create. Without it, everything else becomes untethered, scattered, and unsustainable. With it, everything you build has roots, structure, and capacity to withstand any stormy days (cycles) and any season (expansion).

To master the power of earth magic is to remember that you are already part of the energetic system that exists in all times and dimensions. You are already connected and you don't have to work to create anything new, you only need to master being present with what is already alive.

20 Ways to Master Earth Magic
In saying all this, I want to share simple ways that you can build a practice of mastering your connection to the earth and to the magic of the north, especially when you feel untethered.

Use one, use all, or even create your own list of mastering earth magic.

  1. When you feel unmoored, put your feet on the earth and visualize roots growing out of the bottom of your feet and into the center of the earth. Sit with it (preferably outdoors) and feel the connection between your body and the earth.
  2. If you feel unclear about your path or where to go next, go outside after dark and gaze at the sky, taking deep breaths and feeling your body connect to the bigger picture of your role on this planet.
  3. If you are disconnected from your body because your body has experienced pain or trauma, go sit with a tree and place your hand against its trunk, letting your breath slow until you can feel the tree's energy. Ask the tree to help you find ways back to your center.
  4. Create an outdoor altar (weather permitting) and find a place to sit outdoors each day with your altar and observe how much nature changes each day. You may journal on how much you change each day while sitting at your outdoor altar.
  5. Bring more natural items to your indoor altars. Place them to the north side. Items such as a small fallen branch, a pretty rock, a potted houseplant, pinecone, dried plants, soil, or anything that feels fresh and alive to you. Even grabbing fresh flowers on a regular basis will increase your connection to earth magic.
  6. Combine exercise with ritual. Take your tarot deck to the gym or during a workout and pull a card and feel the card in your body while exercising.
  7. Set an intention that holds the energy of justice for those being harmed in today's world and then repeat the intention when exercising, letting your body's feeling of anger fuel the workout and the workout to push your intention out into the world.
  8. When you feel overwhelmed, run your hands through anything that is outdoors and alive, such as a tree branch, a natural body of water, the snow or rain, or even grass.
  9. When your thoughts are looping, go outside and name five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste.
  10. If you feel numb, lie down on the ground and let your full weight be held and thank the earth mother for holding you.
  11. When you are seeking answers, take a slow walk without your phone and let your body choose the direction and let the living energy of the planet answer what you are questioning.
  12. If you feel disconnected from your senses, eat something that is still alive, such as fruits and vegetables that haven't been cooked.
  13. When you feel scattered, place one hand on your heart and one on your belly and breathe until your body begins to settle. Then notice where there is tension in your body and ask, aloud or in your journal, what the source of the tension is.
  14. If you feel pulled into an algorithm or noise of the world, take a break, a silent hour with no phones, no noise, and sit with nothing to do and imagine that you are a tree blowing in the wind. Paint the picture in your mind of what that would feel like and let your body relax and release what the scrolling did to your energy.
  15. If you are doing any working that has special meaning with relationships or sweetness, write words of the spell with marker on rose petals and add them to a bowl and drizzle honey on it.
  16. Take a fresh flower bloom of any kind and brush it across your bare skin for a blessing of earth. Return the flower to the earth afterwards, as it will take any energy that needs to go and releases it back to nature.
  17. When you feel untethered, return again and again to your body. Rub your right arm with your left hand, and your left arm with your right hand. And then take turns between hands until you have gently touched all the skin on your body. Thank your body for getting you here and to this place in life.
  18. Want to aid the death of your old self? Bury it in the dirt.
  19. Want to see more prosperity in your life? Notice how plentiful and abundant a forest is.
  20. Want stronger connections to spirits? Start by connecting to the land spirits where you live.

When you choose earth magic as a staple of how you live day-to-day, as well as the baseline for creating transformational workings, then the stresses of the outside world begin to feel more manageable. Then maybe, just maybe, we'll retain our humanity in these ever-changing times.
