Online Reference For Body, Mind & Spirit

Term: Borley Rectory

DEFINITION:

Originally built in 1862, this Victorian mansion in Borley, Essex, England, became famous in 1929 when reports of paranormal phenomena and ghosts, published by famed researcher Harry Price, were published. Immediately, reports of spirit sightings increased.

The house was heavily damaged in a fire in 1939 and demolished in 1944. In 1948, after the death of Price and demolition of the house, Price’s accounts were somehow investigated by the Society for Psychical Research which determined that what Price saw was either faked or from natural causes. This has not prevented continued interest in what has been called “the most haunted house in England.”
