POSTED UNDER Blessing, Earth, Garden, AND MORE

A Flowering Garden

Color of the day:  Purple
Incense of the day:  Jasmine

Today is Floralia, the Roman festival in honor of Flora, the goddess of flowers and other growing things. Druidic lore has Blodeuwedd, whose name means “flower face.” Think of how some flowers such as pansies have a “face” on their petals.

Spend the day worshipping your garden. If you have used an off-season cover crop, you can till it under for green manure. Otherwise, dead leaves or cut grass can be worked into the soil to add more organic matter. Composted animal manure also works, though it goes a bit farther from Druidic tradition. Turn over the top layer of soil onto the unbroken surface beside it, work in the organic matter underneath, then put the clean soil back on top. As you work, say:

Garden Goddess, Flower Face,
Lay your blessing on this place:
Everywhere the ground gives room,
Let the earth now burst in bloom.

Plant hardy spring flowers, such as pansies, primroses, or pinks. They will grow well with fresh food underneath and a blessing to bolster them.
