Larentalia

Color of the day:  Green
Incense of the day:  Myrrh

This day was dedicated to a Roman goddess (possibly named Larentia or Lara) who was said to be the guardian of ghosts—specifically the Lares, or good spirits. Offerings were made to her on this day for the departed spirits. These spirits were believed to be the protectors of homes and families. The offerings were typically left in chimney corners, where the Lares were said to dwell.

On this day, leave your own offering for the protection of your home and family. Place the offering near a chimney or hearth, if you have one. If not, any corner of the home will do. Offer a small piece of bread or some dried beans or lentils. Leave the items in place for at least twenty-four hours, then put them outside. Each time you put the offering in place, say these words:

Keep us all from harm,
Protect and guard this home.
Grant us safety while we’re here
And also when we roam.
