The Man in the Moon

Color of the day:  Coral
Incense of the day:  Yarrow

The moon hasn’t always belonged to goddesses. There have also been many lunar gods, whose names you can find online. Perhaps one such god is the Man in the Moon. I know of two songs about him, one by Jerry Herman (in the musical Mame) and the other by Bilbo Baggins. And Genghis Khan traced his ancestry back to a moon god.

It’s time to make friends with the Man in the Moon. How did he get there? One folktale says that he is a wanderer, doomed to forever circle the earth. He obviously sees a lot. What can he do for us? According to several traditions, he watches over us. Go outside tonight, look up, and speak to him:

Old Man in the Moon, I see you up there
Looking down, watching everywhere.
What do you see
When you look at me?
What advice do you have tonight?
How can I live this life aright?
