The principles of the modern African American festival of Kwanzaa are unity, self-determination, collective work, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. As named by Dr. Maulana Karenga, they represent traditional African values.

Because Pagans are not cultural pirates, unless we are part of the African American community, we should not create a Kwanzaa ritual. But we can ask to be invited to a Kwanzaa event or burn red, black, and green candles on our home altar today to support the African American community.

Go online and read about Kwanzaa. Talk to your African American friends about everyday life, especially the good things in life. If your friend is agreeable, take their hands and declare your renewed friendship and support. Say:

"I'm glad we're friends! I bless your
path and my path. It's good that we're
together today in peace, honor, and joy."

Go out to lunch or dinner with your friend.
