Make a Smudge Stick for Protection

Color of the day:  Gray
Incense of the day:  Hyssop

Choose fresh or dried materials to use for your smudge. Sprigs of cedar, fir, pine, sweetgrass, sage, juniper, and rosemary are especially good for protection work.

On a strip of paper, draw protective runes. Or write these words:

"As the smoke surrounds me here,
keep me safe from harm and fear."

Gather the plant materials into a bundle, nestling the paper strip into the middle. Tie the bundle at the base with a thin cotton string. Wind the string around the bundle until you reach the tip, then wind back down to the base. Tie the string off and clip it close. Let the fresh bundle dry on your altar for seven to ten days before using.

To use, hold the bundle over a fireproof dish or abalone shell and light it. Quickly blow out the flame and use the smoke to smudge and protect you, others, or a location, repeating the previous mantra.
