Gabija Bread Blessing

Color of the day:  Indigo
Incense of the day:  Pine

For most of us, winter's grip holds tight to the surrounding countryside. We keep to indoor pursuits, which, for our family, includes making bread. Nothing tastes better on a cold winter day than warm, homemade bread with butter and a bowl of soup. During these dark days of winter, comfort food most definitely helps keep spirits high.

Before slicing into your beautiful loaf, ask Gabija for a blessing. Gabija is a Lithuanian hearth goddess, protector of the fire and of the grain. With the advent of Christianity, Gabija was identified as Saint Agnes, who safeguarded homes from fire and was the patron saint of virgins. Lay your hands over the bread and say:

"Gabija of the hearth and of the grain, bless this bread
To keep us strong through the long winter days ahead.
Bless our hearts with your loving flame.
Help our minds keep bright until spring's reign."
