The Nurturing Log

Color of the day:  White
Incense of the day:  Violet

Oak trees are sacred in Druidic tradition. Their wood is dense and strong, able to last a long time. In the forest, fallen oaks often become "nurse logs," which help new seedlings to sprout.

In the garden, logs can help retain moisture during dry times so you don't have to water your plants as often. One method is to dig a hole deep enough for the logs to rest about a foot below the surface. Another is to lay the logs on the ground and build a raised bed over them. Cover the logs with a layer of grass clippings, fill the rest of the space with soil or compost, then water thoroughly. As you work, repeat this charm:

"Tree of the Druids, tree of the gods,
Work your slow magic under the clods.
Hold in the water, banish the drought;
Nourish these plants day in and night out."
