Color of the day: Turquoise Incense of the day: Myrrh For many Sicilians, Catholics, and New Orleans residents, Saint Joseph's Day is celebrated with a feast. To express gratitude for your sustenance, to curry the favor of Saint Joseph, and to protect against poverty, bake two loaves of yeast bread containing fennel seeds, honey, and golden raisins. Create an altar to Saint Joseph near your dinner table with a red cloth and a statue or jar candle depicting his likeness. Place one loaf of bread on the altar, along with a bowl containing nineteen fava beans. Place another bowl of nineteen fava beans in the center of the dinner table. Invite your friends or family to enjoy the second loaf with a hearty, meat-free meal. Afterward, ask Saint Joseph to bless the fava bean centerpiece with the energy of abundance and luck, and the thank him heartily. The beans will then become luck-drawing charms. Bestow one upon each diner. |
