During the time surrounding the great turning of the year wheel, magic would have been performed to protect against any unwanted energies, and to ensure positive influences in the newly born year. In Scotland, amulets were used for protection, either worn or carried upon the person or carefully placed in the home. Necklaces of lucky stones were created and worn, as were bracelets of leather, copper, braided hair, or red coral. Iron and rowan berries were also used, as was an amulet of senna, mint, and rue. In ancient times, the Picts (early Celtic inhabitants of northern Britain, renowned for their tattoos) created and used white quartz pebbles for healing and probably also for protection. These were quartz river stones, smoothed by the water's motion, on which were painted certain symbols or patterns in red. Create a special amulet to protect you, guide you, and bless you as you walk along the path of the Old Ones in this new year.
