Let’s spend this summer studying The Sun card! Each entry between May and August (8 total) will feature a Sun card from a different deck along with the text the creator wrote for it. It will be interesting to see how so many people see difference aspects of this apparently simple card.

Today we go under the surface and look at the sun from a new perspective with the Mermaid Tarot by Leeza Robertson and Julie Dillon

The Sun

Under the sea, the sun lights up the water forming liquid bubbles of golden light. The young Mer-children hold out their hands as if trying to catch the light in the palms of their hands. As it bounces around the rippling currents of the ocean even the sea turtles bask in its warm rays. In the shallower parts of the ocean, the sun acts much the same as it does above the waterline, bringing life to plants and allowing coral and sea vegetables to grow and thrive. The warmer waters often provide safe spaces and sanctuaries to both the sea life and the Mer-folk. Here under the glow of the midday day, sun one can forget about their worries, relax, and play. If you are lucky, you might even catch one of those golden bubbles of liquid sunlight.

Upright – The sun gives life. It provides energy and warmth for things to grow and thrive. It is one of the key elements to creation along with water and oxygen, which in the shallow warm waters of the sea we have an abundance of all three. The perfect conditions for creation, an auspicious merging of energy to provide the exact conditions you need to solve a problem, begin a relationship or start a new project.

Reversed – Just as the sun can give life, it can also take it away. Climate change has shown the devastating effects of the sun on bleached and dying coral reefs all over the world. Once thriving feeding and spawning areas now lay barren like underwater ghost towns. This reminds us that the sun is a power we don’t have control over. When it is done providing the life-giving support you will know it. For it will start to burn through all that it has created and head towards something more worthy of its time and immense energy. Let this be a warning not to linger too long in the heat of this card. Use it for what you need. Respects it and honor its creation power and then release it before it turns on you and burns everything you love to cinders.
