Sunday 30th May, 6pmGMT (London)

The death of a loved one inevitably brings grief for our loss and calls us to face our own mortality. Many of us wish to prepare for a good death whether in hospital, a nursing facility or in our own homes. And many of us wish to reclaim the beauty, peace and healing of caring for the dying and the dead, both for ourselves and for those we love.

Our understanding of the death and mortality salience is highly influenced and programmed by society, the media and our upbringing. By understanding the nuts and bolts of death, existentialism, mortality fears and anxieties we dramatically change our perception of death and its effect on the human mind, body and spirit.

This course is presented in 3 parts:

Ante Mortem—explores the nature of death and mortality salience.

Peri Mortem—explores the act of dying and the moment of death.

Post Mortem—explores caring for the body, funerals and bereavement.

The course will focus on many topics, including but not limited to:

  • The function of death midwifery the Amicus Mortis and the role of the death Doula.
  • The exploration of philosophical questions about death and what it means to die.
  • Mortuary rituals and practise throughout history.
  • How to work alongside medical professionals and funeral directors to create a sacred space prior to and after death.
  • Exploration of the art and role of the celebrant.
  • Understanding the function of human grief and bereavement.
  • How to develop active listening and compassion skills for the dying and the bereaved.
  • How art and creativity can help create meaningful ceremonies.
  • The function of funerals and mortuary rituals.
  • Choices such as alternative funerals, green burials and coffins.
  • How to care for the body after death.
  • Practical techniques for safe lifting, bathing, blessing, anointing and dressing your beloved dead.
  • Alternative forms of refrigeration and keeping the body cold.
  • Dealing with traumatic death injuries, contagious diseases and other health risks.
  • The legal paperwork required, plus other legal requirements to safeguard both the dead and public health.
  • The role of the Coroner and other legal agencies.
  • Envisioning our own death and facing our fears.
  • How to deal and reconcile with tragic and or sudden deaths.
  • Reconciling with trauma, murder and suicide.

This course is suitable for those wishing to enhance and expand their knowledge of death and bereavement, and for those embarking on or currently in funeral consultancy roles, bereavement services, death doulas and death midwives, and those wishing to serve their communities at the end of life.
